Okay...stupid quest.
I'm thinking of making a big move and I'm trying to narrow down my selection of possible destinations.
Anyone have any good pros or cons about Nebraska....besides the corn??? LOL -

Re: New to the Tribe
Mon, May 17, 2004 - 10:47 PMcon: Nebraska is populated by bad drivers, so you'd have to deal with them.
pro: whereever you're moving from is also populated by bad drivers, so you can escape the ones where you are.

Re: New to the Tribe
Thu, May 20, 2004 - 8:08 AMI've traveled to quite a few places in the United States, and I find I'm still happy to live in Nebraska. My brother, on the other hand, recently moved to San Francisco... ;-)
Nebraskans are generally friendly, though thankfully not in an overbearing or intrusive way. The air is clean, and I feel safe walking my dog at night. Here in Hastings, we have excellent schools (including two colleges), an astronomical observatory which offers free public programs, a nifty natural history museum with a planetarium and a big screen theater, two independent bookstores (one new and one used), three art galleries, two dance studios, a coffee shop with live music and poetry readings, a "Listening Room" singer/songwriter music series, a symphony, the annual Cottonwood Festival, an organic foods co-op, a historic fountain, a little Japanese garden co-planted with our sister city, three gyms, several massage therapists (including me!) and so on. It's not as culturally deprived as one might imagine.
However, I will admit that ethnically diverse restaurants are very hard to find. Hastings has Chinese, Mexican, and Italian, and that's about it. If I crave an Indian meal, I have to drive 100 miles to Lincoln or cook it myself. This is probably my biggest complaint overall. The weather here can also be harsh, with extreme temperature swings in the spring (sometimes as much as 70 degrees in a few days), bitter winds in the winter, high humidity in the summer, and occasional tornados.
Hope that helps. I'm new at Tribe, but feel free to send me a message, Kelli, if you have questions. -

The cost of living is low. But so are the wages.
